Simplify the way you’ll find your next adventure

Designing a more user focused adventure planning website

The Research

Overview

In the current dynamic travel environment, there is a growing need for comprehensive tools and resources to assist travelers in efficiently organizing their trips, taking into account the diverse activities and destinations they wish to explore.

The problem is that there aren’t many tools available that meets all of a traveler’s specification when looking for inspiration, organizing ideas, and filtering out trips through desired activities/destinations.

Wayfarer is a fresh approach to help new and seasoned travelers alike generate, specify, sort, plan, and book trip(s) of their dreams.

Assumptions

  • Users book less trips because they have don’t have the right tools to help them generate and organize their ideas for an adventure.

  • Having an app with more features to specify and drill down into their dream trip will result in more trips booked.

Competitive Analysis

Wayfarer competes directly with online travel booking platforms like Viator, Tripadvisor, Airbnb, Get Your Guide, etc. Each one of these sites was listed on travelsanddestinations.com as one of the best places to book tours, activities, and experiences online.

1:1 Interview

I conversed with individuals between the ages of 25-36 who possess a keen passion for exploration, are inherently curious, and have a fondness for culinary experiences. Through these conversations, I aimed to understand their frustrations with current trip booking systems and brainstorm ways to enhance their overall experience, making it more seamless and enjoyable.

The interviews showed that travelers just want an easy booking process. They'd like to filter things based on what they specifically need and care about, so when they're ready to book, everything is crystal clear.

How might we enhance the trip booking process to provide explorers with a seamless and user-friendly experience, incorporating easy filtering options for a clear and straightforward booking journey?

During this phase in the design process, user-centricity is prioritized through drawing up lo-fi wireframes for the landing page, categorized adventure types, and a streamlined booking process. Through iterative refinement, the design aims for a seamless and intuitive user experience, considering feedback to optimize usability and visual appeal.

    • Providing more content increases the website’s credibility as a trustworthy travel information site

Takeaways

Designing an adventure tour site taught me that it's super important to focus on what the users, or potential adventurers, really want and like. Making the site better involved listening to what users had to say and making changes based on their feedback, showing how important their opinions are. In the end, the key is to make the site easy to use, look good, and be super fun for people interested in adventure tourism!
